United Airlines resumes flights after 'major' tech outage

United Airlines said that it was holding flights at their origin due to a “technology issue,” with the computer outage affecting flights Wednesday evening and into tomorrow.
The airline also requested that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for flights across affected airports. That ground stop — which primarily affected traffic at the airline’s key hubs like Newark, Chicago O’Hare and Houston — has since been lifted.
Despite the clearing of that ground stop, United travelers are likely to be ensnarled in the delays into the A.M. hours. As of 11:40 P.M. EDT, nearly 1,100 United flights (about 35% of its flights) have been delayed. 107 (3% of flights) have been cancelled per data from FlightAware.
FlightAware’s MiseryMap shows that worst of the delays have concentrated around the airline’s hubs at Denver International, Chicago’s O’Hare International, and San Francisco International Airports.
Similar technical outages have plagued U.S. airlines in recent months. Two weeks ago, Alaska Airlines (ALK) experienced an IT outage which resulted in a temporary grounding of flights. Other U.S. airlines, including Delta (DAL) and Southwest (LUV) , have experienced other disruptive technical outages in recent years.
